"ZAHARA" THE Fortune teller
She is no ordinary coin-operated automata.
Routine
A 1930's fortune teller automation is presented.
The cabinet opens, the top lifts up and prop is plugged into power from off stage. A volunteer from audience is asked to help in the demonstration. A short explanation follows about how the antique coin operated fortune tellers work.
The magician tells how this antique was found in his grand parents' attic. He inserts a coin. Old scratchy gypsy music plays from its built-in speakers. He explains that Zahara can answer questions about the future. Zahara responds with a shake of the tambourine: one shake for YES, two shakes for NO. She has some limited movements during this period: head and eyes moving side to side, one arm moving up and down. After a few fun questions, she reveals a fortune teller card from a slot in the side of the cabinet. At this point, we stop. The magician explains that this card usually has your good fortune and has your horoscope, lucky numbers and a few predictions. Instead of looking at the presented card that remains in full view of the audience, the magician asks the volunteer some questions to test Zahara to see if she has presented credible information on the card.
After this information is noted, the magician invites the volunteer to read the fortune card to verify if Zahara was correct. She is not even close...
We all have a laugh seeming like Zahara have been wrong. The magician explains how these novelty fortune tellers work, pointing at a stack of generalized and vague fortune cards in the base of the cabinet. He says unsuspecting people believe in these prophecies. As he is saying so to the audience, the cabinet sparks and smokes. It has to be unplugged quickly from the socket, so now the there is no visible power to the unit.
As the magician faces the audience and in front of Zahara, he tells how this is just a novelty "bunko" and not to be taken seriously. He does not realize Zahara's eyes and the sconces light up in red even the unit is unpluged She floats up behind him and comes to life waving her tambourine, yelling in a deep scary voice not to mess with the spirits. During this section, the music comes from the full house system for a larger impact.
The magician steps back surprised at this automated floating apparition. He says "Zahara can you tell us the future to prove you are real?" And she does. The bottom cabinet opens and all the fortune cards shoot into the air. She catches one card with her out-stretched hand and floats back down into position. Of course the fortune tellers card in her hand now has all the correct prophecies given by the volunteer printed on it.
